'Instant power' just one of the lures for buyers eyeing electric cars l p_hannam

- including a target of reaching half of new car sales by 2030 - has put the spotlight on a market that is just getting started in Australia.

Just 2216 EVs were sold last year, making up 0.2 per cent of the Australian market, leaving the country behind the likes of Norway where plug-in cars grabbed almost 60 per cent of sales last month. One brake has been the steep upfront cost of EVs and paucity of public recharging points, fostering "range anxiety" concerns. These will ease as battery technology advances.

Limited consumer choice - with about 11 models available or soon to be - will also improve with as many as 60 models on the market within three years as production rockets globally. Here are some consumers' motoring experiences and models that may tempt more to go all-electric.Industrial designer Rabah Maraby has sights on a Sydney to Gold Coast drive this weekend with just two recharge stops planned for his Tesla EV after plugging into Mirvac's recharge centre in Broadway.

"Not having to stop at a service station is really cool," he says as he recharged at Broadway Shopping Centre in inner Sydney on Thursday. As is the car's "instant power", an advantage all EVs have over petrol rivals.

p_hannam Makes sense if you live in a city, less so in the region's. Genuine question, are the recharge points free, or do you pay for the electricity?

p_hannam Citing Norway as green seems ironic as its economy is propped up by North Sea oil and gas

p_hannam That's a big car or a small person. smh p_hannam

p_hannam Sounds like no incentive or subsidies will be required. Right? And please stop comparing Australia to Norway. Infrastructure needs and cost are very, very different. If Australia were Norway the NBN would have cost a fraction of $50b+.

Labor’s electric car ‘policy madness’ is a ‘recipe for disaster’: Kenny | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says Labor’s climate policy and electric car plan is ‘policy madness’ and a ‘recipe for disaster’. \n\nAs part of his climate policy, Opposition leader Bill Shorten has committed to ensuring 50 per cent of all vehicles, equating to about 575,000 cars, sold in 10 years’ time will be electric.\n\nFollowing a radio interview in which Mr Shorten made errors in the time it takes to charge one of these vehicles, Mr Kenny says his ‘silly comments’ have exposed the ‘recklessness and implausibility’ of his climate and energy policy push.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n chriskkenny billshortenmp Common sense will prevail you would hope and the electric car bull shit will die a natural death. Who ever set silly Billy up with this rubbish, will be laughing their heads off ! 😂 chriskkenny billshortenmp More Murdoch’s influence on fakenews? chriskkenny billshortenmp Over in Texas they charge car 30 minutes by sun look it up

Labor’s electric car target is 'not realistic at all': Sharma | Sky News AustraliaDave Sharma is warning against Labor's 50 per cent electric car target, saying a transition to electric vehicles ‘should be driven by consumer behaviour and preferences’, not forced by politicians. \n\nLabor has committed to ensuring half the nation’s new cars are electric by 2030, a policy that the Liberal Candidate for Wentworth believes is ‘not realistic at all’.\n\nWhile Mr Sharma says he hopes to see Australia move towards a lower-carbon future, he believes the country and its leaders needs to ‘be practical and responsible in how we go about doing this’. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Not forced. It's only a target of 50% new sales by 2030. It's very very similar to the coalition's policy on EVs. What government should do is work on infrastructure. Despite the moaning by the coalition in the last week, they themselves have been funding charging infrastructure what if nobody buys them? Oh of course, a carbon dioxide tax on petrol and diesel cars, trucks etc for this giant hoax This is a perfect example of a liberal politician thinking that sitting on their hands is a perfect climate change plan.

Campaign politics masks bipartisan commitment to boost electric car salesCoalition attacks on Labor ahead of a looming federal election mask bipartisan support to get more electric cars on roads across the country. This is fast becoming the worst country in the world. Looking for opportunities in either Hungary or Poland. And where's the power coming from to run all these electric cars? It sure as shit won't be from Australia's limp excuse for an energy infrastructure. Just wait until even more is gutted in favour of unsustainable, unrenewables. It's literally gonna be NBN 2.0 X 1000 We don’t need a target that’s the problem.

Labor's electric car policy is 'utter madness': Kelly | Sky News AustraliaFULL INTERVIEW: Liberal MP Craig Kelly has labelled the Opposition's electric vehicle policy 'complete and utter madness', arguing that it will 'cost the economy billions'.\n\nLabor has said if its elected, it will aim to have electric vehicles make up 50 per cent of new car sales by 2030.\n\nMr Kelly says there is 'no place less suitable' for electric cars than Australia when the nation's energy grids are coal-fired and 'will be for years to come'.\n\nElectric vehicles in Australia, Mr Kelly says, would be essentially charged on coal-fired power and would ultimately 'increase CO2 emissions', which Labor also plans to reduce by 45 per cent.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n\n\n\n\n Gallo_Ways billshortenmp Perhaps Shorten needs to focus on other major issues facing Australians rather going to the election with a badly flawed policy and yet, where's the material coming from to build batteries for electric cars. How many recharging stations will be along the Bruce highway & others? Gallo_Ways billshortenmp Thing I don't get is, where are the sagely-nodding heads around the political errors in Coalition's 25-50% EV target for 2030? Are we just assuming they never meant it to happen, so they deserve no criticism either? Gallo_Ways billshortenmp Is this flawed electric car policy document part of the ALP National Convention policy document or a questionable one of Shorten's.
