Coalition attacks on Labor ahead of a looming federal election mask bipartisan support to get more electric cars on roads across the country.

At the moment, most industry guides say it takes hours to charge a car but the technology is rapidly improving.Hussein Dia, the chair of civil engineering at Swinburne University, said a number of car manufacturers were investing in ultra-fast charging stations that would dramatically slash charging times.

"Most need hours, but there are claims by manufactures who are developing fast charging stations that new tech can charge 80 per cent of the battery in 15-30 minutes," Professor Dia said. In December, a German prototype led by BMW and Porsche gave an electric vehicle enough battery life to travel its first 100 kilometres in three minutes, although this technology is not yet available to market.

Dr Mortimer said these investments from car companies would eventually improve the value of electric cars. "Being able to recharge cars within the recommended driving break time is expected to be a game changer for market uptake as it should help to address drivers' remaining range anxiety," she said.

Agreed. Electric car takeup will be fine if price is right. The question is: What will happen with fuel excise? A major funding source of road maintenance. Will the Govn increase fuel excise (adding 40c/l) to maintain the roads and force more people onto electric. auspol

At a minimum, have a standard ADR charge plug. This arrangement worldwide is a joke, how can these be like phone chargers.....

F-ck electric cars.

Attended a national energy conference in 2008 where Fed Min (with CSIRO numbers) said we’d have between 750,000 and 2 mil EVs in Oz by 2020. Errrr bit short on that cause Aussies aren’t buying them.

How do I charge my electric car when I can only park it on the street overnight?

Considering most major carmakers are going 100% electric by 2030, and since Australia doesn't have a car industry, we should have started 10 years ago.

We don’t need a target that’s the problem.

And where's the power coming from to run all these electric cars? It sure as shit won't be from Australia's limp excuse for an energy infrastructure. Just wait until even more is gutted in favour of unsustainable, unrenewables. It's literally gonna be NBN 2.0 X 1000

This is fast becoming the worst country in the world. Looking for opportunities in either Hungary or Poland.

Labor’s electric car target is 'not realistic at all': Sharma | Sky News AustraliaDave Sharma is warning against Labor's 50 per cent electric car target, saying a transition to electric vehicles ‘should be driven by consumer behaviour and preferences’, not forced by politicians. \n\nLabor has committed to ensuring half the nation’s new cars are electric by 2030, a policy that the Liberal Candidate for Wentworth believes is ‘not realistic at all’.\n\nWhile Mr Sharma says he hopes to see Australia move towards a lower-carbon future, he believes the country and its leaders needs to ‘be practical and responsible in how we go about doing this’. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Not forced. It's only a target of 50% new sales by 2030. It's very very similar to the coalition's policy on EVs. What government should do is work on infrastructure. Despite the moaning by the coalition in the last week, they themselves have been funding charging infrastructure what if nobody buys them? Oh of course, a carbon dioxide tax on petrol and diesel cars, trucks etc for this giant hoax This is a perfect example of a liberal politician thinking that sitting on their hands is a perfect climate change plan.

NRMA dismisses claim Labor's electric vehicle target will leave tradies strandedThe NRMA has called for a ban on the sale of petrol-powered vehicles as early as 2025, saying global car manufacturers will soon stop building them. nicole_hasham Tradies will be able to leave home every morning with a full battery for just a few dollars nicole_hasham NRMA claim is solely based on the proposition that technology will advance to an extent to solve the problem which is tantamount to just wishful thinking and no basis in fact nicole_hasham Even the board of the NRMA has been absorbed by Labor biased climate alarmist feminists.
