Why is everyone in politics talking about electric cars?

So, why are pollies talking about electric cars? The federal opposition wants half of new car sales to be electric vehicles by 2030 and 50 per cent of the government's fleet to be electric by 2025.In announcing the plan, Labor Leader Bill Shorten said Australia lags behind other developed nations in adopting the new models. As part of the plan, businesses would also be allowed to deduct a 20 per cent depreciation for private fleet electric vehicles worth at least $20,000.

"We are significantly behind the uptake of EVs in this country relative to what we might see as comparative markets."Prime Minister Scott Morrison has ridiculed Labor's target, and described it on Monday as Labor's"war on the weekend"."What Australians have always expressed a preference for is the vehicles that have a bit of grunt and a bit of power, because they like to enjoy the great recreational opportunities that are out there," he said.

"It is estimated that by 2025 there will be 230,000 such cars on our roads and more than one million by 2030. "Electric vehicles have the potential to lower transport costs, enhance fuel security, and increasingly create more sustainable cities with less pollution and better health outcomes for our communities," he said.Last week, Mr Shorten said"it can take eight to 10 minutes" to charge a vehicle, but later added,"it can take longer".The Coalition was quick to jump on the claim, saying it was unrealistic.

Labor’s electric car ‘policy madness’ is a ‘recipe for disaster’: Kenny | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says Labor’s climate policy and electric car plan is ‘policy madness’ and a ‘recipe for disaster’. \n\nAs part of his climate policy, Opposition leader Bill Shorten has committed to ensuring 50 per cent of all vehicles, equating to about 575,000 cars, sold in 10 years’ time will be electric.\n\nFollowing a radio interview in which Mr Shorten made errors in the time it takes to charge one of these vehicles, Mr Kenny says his ‘silly comments’ have exposed the ‘recklessness and implausibility’ of his climate and energy policy push.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n chriskkenny billshortenmp Common sense will prevail you would hope and the electric car bull shit will die a natural death. Labor’s electric car target is 'not realistic at all': Sharma | Sky News AustraliaDave Sharma is warning against Labor's 50 per cent electric car target, saying a transition to electric vehicles ‘should be driven by consumer behaviour and preferences’, not forced by politicians. \n\nLabor has committed to ensuring half the nation’s new cars are electric by 2030, a policy that the Liberal Candidate for Wentworth believes is ‘not realistic at all’.\n\nWhile Mr Sharma says he hopes to see Australia move towards a lower-carbon future, he believes the country and its leaders needs to ‘be practical and responsible in how we go about doing this’. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Not forced. It's only a target of 50% new sales by 2030. It's very very similar to the coalition's policy on EVs. What government should do is work on infrastructure. Despite the moaning by the coalition in the last week, they themselves have been funding charging infrastructure what if nobody buys them? Oh of course, a carbon dioxide tax on petrol and diesel cars, trucks etc for this giant hoax This is a perfect example of a liberal politician thinking that sitting on their hands is a perfect climate change plan.

Labor’s electric car push sounds like another pink batts scheme ‘on steroids’: Bolt | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Andrew Bolt says Labor’s plan to put more electric cars on the road is like another pink batts scheme ‘on steroids’. \n\nAs part of his climate policy announced on Monday, Opposition leader Bill Shorten has committed to ensure 50 per cent of all cars sold in 10 years’ time will be electric.\n\nMr Bolt says that if Australians use more electric cars, people will use more electricity, which Labor will provide less of when closing coal-fired power generators to cut emissions. \n JaneMarwick billshortenmp It's a green flag for the opportunity of the century. How would this compare to a 1910 call for petrol powered vehicles? Go have a look!!! JaneMarwick billshortenmp It’s OK. Electric cars are coal powered. JaneMarwick billshortenmp Maybe Credlin would like to go back 100 years to see how petrol ousted horses. It started like she sounds...

Australia ultimately ‘won’t have a choice’ about electric cars: Di Natale | Sky News AustraliaGreens Leader Richard Di Natale says Australia is a step behind the rest of the world when it comes to adopting electric vehicles. \n\nSenator Di Natale has told Sky News that future vehicles will have low running costs and low emissions, and combustion vehicles will not be an option. \n\nHe argues the conservatives’ ‘ridiculous’ scare campaign clinging to 1950s technology deters progress. \n\nHis remarks come after Labor announced its target to make 50 per cent of new cars sold in Australia electric by 2030. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n Hard to argue against him. FTTN NBN ring any bells? So true Di Natale full of lies again. Most countries in the world do not have 50% electric cars and countries that do have many electric cars are small. They don't have the same distances Australia has.

Labor's electric car policy is 'utter madness': Kelly | Sky News AustraliaFULL INTERVIEW: Liberal MP Craig Kelly has labelled the Opposition's electric vehicle policy 'complete and utter madness', arguing that it will 'cost the economy billions'.\n\nLabor has said if its elected, it will aim to have electric vehicles make up 50 per cent of new car sales by 2030.\n\nMr Kelly says there is 'no place less suitable' for electric cars than Australia when the nation's energy grids are coal-fired and 'will be for years to come'.\n\nElectric vehicles in Australia, Mr Kelly says, would be essentially charged on coal-fired power and would ultimately 'increase CO2 emissions', which Labor also plans to reduce by 45 per cent.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n\n\n\n\n Gallo_Ways billshortenmp Perhaps Shorten needs to focus on other major issues facing Australians rather going to the election with a badly flawed policy and yet, where's the material coming from to build batteries for electric cars. How many recharging stations will be along the Bruce highway & others? Gallo_Ways billshortenmp Thing I don't get is, where are the sagely-nodding heads around the political errors in Coalition's 25-50% EV target for 2030? Are we just assuming they never meant it to happen, so they deserve no criticism either? Gallo_Ways billshortenmp Is this flawed electric car policy document part of the ALP National Convention policy document or a questionable one of Shorten's.

Government hypocritical about Labor’s electric car target: O'Connor | Sky News AustraliaFULL INTERVIEW: Shadow Employment Minister Brendan O'Connor says he doesn’t know why the government has turned its back on electric vehicle targets. \n\nMr O'Connor says until this week, the government's own Treasurer Josh Frydenberg was calling for the technology to be embraced. \n\nLabor leader Bill Shorten announced his party planned to make half of all new cars sold in 2030 electric. \n\nThe Labor MP has argued electric vehicles are affordable in the United States and the United Kingdom, and Australia will follow suit. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia \n\n\n Josh Frydenberg acknowledged that last nite on Q&A. He has openly embraced the electric car technology in the past, but his issue is how is Labor going to meet this 50% target in 11 years. I’m interested in that detail too Brendan. Please explain! NO LNP were presented with proposals which COULD be targets! They Would NOT FORCE adoption like Labor & O'Connor propose Isn't Brendan O'Connor the guy whose brother got a 'job for the boys' ? Or vice versa ?

Campaign politics masks bipartisan commitment to boost electric car salesCoalition attacks on Labor ahead of a looming federal election mask bipartisan support to get more electric cars on roads across the country. This is fast becoming the worst country in the world. Looking for opportunities in either Hungary or Poland. And where's the power coming from to run all these electric cars? It sure as shit won't be from Australia's limp excuse for an energy infrastructure. Just wait until even more is gutted in favour of unsustainable, unrenewables. It's literally gonna be NBN 2.0 X 1000 We don’t need a target that’s the problem.
