It found that in 2021, 45 per cent of Australia's saltmarsh ecosystems were in Queensland, along with 31 per cent of the nation's seagrass ecosystems.Peter Meadows, the director for the Centre of Environmental and Satellite Accounts, said saltmarsh ecosystems covered "about 1 million hectares " of the nation's coastline."These saltmarshes have an effect of dampening down the waves from storms, and also as a buffer from storm surges," he said.
"They can take carbon out of the atmosphere and lock it down in the sediments, lock it away and become a big carbon sink," he said.
