Former fire chiefs from across Australia are calling on the federal government to act now against the"urgent threat" of climate change as bushfires devastate parts of the country.from every state and territory are insisting harder-to-control fires have broken out earlier-than-normal across New South Wales and Queensland because of global warming.

Greg Mullins, a former NSW fire and rescue commissioner, said scientists have been warning for decades about catastrophic fires. On Monday, Nationals leader Michael McCormack attacked"raving inner-city lunatics" for linking climate change to the fires.
