Nationals MPs have been warned they should heed the concerns over climate change in their own communities ahead of the federal election, with internal research revealing the risk to the party in key electorates from a bitter Coalition split on coal-fired power.
The findings are fuelling fears within the party about a backlash in Nationals strongholds in northern NSW and possibly other areas, where voters have increased their support for the Greens and independents.In a sign of those concerns, Victorian Nationals leader Peter Walsh accused former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce of hurting the party with his calls for federal aid for a new coal-fired power station in Queensland.
Nationals MP Kevin Hogan holds the electorate of Page by a margin of 3.1 per cent, leaving him at risk from Labor at the coming election, while Nationals candidate Patrick Conaghan is seeking to hold the seat of Cowper against a challenge from former independent MP Rob Oakeshott. "The overwhelming response I'm receiving about climate change and coal is that we need to start moving away from it," Mr Conaghan said.
"They are the practical environmentalists in the community who join Landcare and undertake projects to sustain their properties and the environment," he said.
