Five federal seats where climate change is set to wreak the worst damage are held by Nationals MPs whose party colleagues want the government to finance new carbon-emitting coal plants, new analysis has revealed.
The federal electorates most vulnerable to climate change are in regional areas far from the coast, analysis has found.However a group of vocal Queensland Nationals MPs say high power prices are hurting voters in their electorates, and have been agitating for the government to fund a new power generation project in regional Queensland before the election. The most likely project is a coal-fired power plant.
Of those 20 electorates, eight were held by the Nationals, five each were held by the Liberal and Labor parties, one was held by independent Bob Katter and one was the redrawn seat of Canberra, which does not yet have a federal member. Mr O’Dowd, Ms Landry and Mr O’Brien are among a group of six MPs in marginal Queensland seats who wrote to Nationals leader Michael McCormack this month pushing for the Coalition to commit to funding a new power plant in regional Queensland ahead of the election.
