More than 100 schools have to shut buildings immediately over concrete safety fears, it has emerged. And Rishi Sunak has reshuffled his top team, with Grant Shapps succeeding Ben Wallace as defence secretary and Claire Coutinho entering cabinet as energy secretary.

A number of schools in England have been told to immediately close buildings that contain a type of concrete that is prone to collapse. It is the same type of concrete that has been found in some hospitals now deemed to be unsafe, prompting Health Secretary Steve Barclay to fast-track them into the government's hospitals-building programme.

"Our research has shown however, that this is often not the case for RAAC panels constructed in the 1950s, 60s and 70s."Doctors in England have voted in favour of further strike action as a dispute over pay and conditions rumbles on. "That's got enormous implications for our defence spending, for spending on our own armed forces, for having enough money to equip the Ukrainian military as well. Speaking about the outgoing defence secretary, he went on to say Mr Wallace was a"very successful minister" and was the"right choice for the job".

The type of concrete forcing building closures is Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, known as RAAC, which is prone to collapse. "Pupil safety is paramount but for this to come out just days before term starts is totally unacceptable. "The schools minister even broke his own promise to publish information about at-risk properties before parliament's summer recess."But to wait until the eleventh hour as schools are preparing for a new academic year will create turmoil for thousands of families. And this could just be the tip of the iceberg."

"But there is no escaping the fact that the timing of this couldn't be worse, with children due to return from the summer holidays next week."As we've reported in the past few minutes, schools in England have been told to shut buildings made with a certain type of concrete that is prone to collapse.
