PM's trusted communicator Shapps promoted to Defence Secretary in fifth Cabinet post in a year

A number of names had been suggested as his possible replacement alongside Mr Shapps,Following the announcement, Mr Shapps wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “honoured to be appointed” to the role.

His role as Defence Secretary is his fifth Cabinet position in the last year, having moved jobs several times between the quick changeover of three Prime Ministers, and seeing his department renamed. Mr Sunak made Mr Shapps Business Secretary, but the role was abolished in February 2023 after the department was renamed. He then took on his fourth Cabinet title as Energy and Net Zero Secretary in the new Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Prior to entering politics, he founded the PrintHouse Corporation which was a print design and website creation company.
