Returning now to Rishi Sunak's cabinet reshuffle, we've been speaking to Lord Peter Ricketts, a former under-secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, to get his take on Grant Shapps' appointment as defence secretary.Lord Ricketts told Sky News Mr Shapps is clearly a minister who had the prime minister's confidence as someone who could"take the reins quickly and get moving".
The closure of dozens of school buildings over safety fears is the"result of years of Conservative neglect", the Liberal Democrats have said. She added:"Parents, teachers and pupils will be horrified that children have been taught in unsafe buildings and cannot return to school next week. Around 104 schools have been contacted by the government and told to close areas and buildings made with a certain type of concrete that is prone to collapse.Mr Short said:"This situation is nothing short of a scandal.
"What we are seeing here are the very real consequences of a decade of swingeing cuts to spending on school buildings," he said. In response, Labour's Bridget Phillipson described the situation as"an absolutely staggering display of Tory incompetence".
