A poorly insulated attic could be costing you money and comfort. CPS Energy will pay you to put in new, highly rated insulation.

The idea is to encourage you to put in attic insulation that's better than what you have now. CPS will pay you a rebate based on the total square footage you install, provided you meet various conditions. For starters, you have to install insulation between an air-conditioned living space and an un-air conditioned attic.

Insulation is rated by its R-Value, which measures how well a material resists heat transfer. CPS Energy will give you a rebate to help you install attic insulation with a higher R-Value than what's there now.It depends on the layout of your attic. If your attic has an overhead clearance of two feet or more, CPS won't pay a rebate unless the existing insulation has an R-Value of 14 or lower and the new insulation is R-38 or higher.

For tight-squeeze attics with less than two feet of clearance, the insulation you're replacing has to be R-11 or lower and the new insulation has to be R-19 or better. You don't need to. It's spelled out in great detail on the Home Energy Rebate Application. ClickCPS will pay you to ditch your gasoline-powered lawn mower and go electricYour rebate depends on how big a space you're insulating and whether you do the work yourself or hire a contractor.

If you go with a professional, CPS will pay you 35 cents per square foot of newly installed insulation. If you do it yourself, they'll pay 25 cents per square foot. It's more of a"trust but verify" system, to quote the late Ronald Reagan. CPS says it will consult Bexar County property tax records to verify the square footage you list on your rebate application. It might even send over an inspector to eyeball your attic.

Oh, yes. Along with a rebate application, you have to submit an itemized, dated receipt or invoice showing how much insulation you installed, what kind, the R-Values of both the old and new insulation — and how much money you spent.
