The effects of climate change are taking a toll on Christmas tree farms in British Columbia and beyond, with one forestry expert saying the sector that’s already shrinking and shifting will need to adapt in the coming years.

VANCOUVER - The effects of climate change are taking a toll on Christmas tree farms across Canada, with one forestry expert and the head of the Canadian Christmas Tree Association saying the sector that’s already undergoing shifts will need to adapt.

Seedlings and their shallow roots are also at risk of being inundated during flooding, while wet, cool soils increase the risk of root diseases, Hamelin noted. The difference, Brennan said, is the extreme, unseasonable nature of recent droughts and other climate-related events, including intense late-spring frosts in Nova Scotia in 2018 followed by eastern Ontario and western Quebec in 2020.

Climate change is not the only factor challenging farmers and threatening Canada’s stock of real Christmas trees, which has been declining for several years.

'...and beyond'? Nope. FakeNews when written that way. Perhaps the reporter should stick to the facts and say '... affecting Christmas trees in BC'. It's all doing great here in Ontario, and this is part of '...and beyond'. LazyJournalism

Climate change affecting Christmas trees in B.C. and beyond: expertThe effects of climate change are taking a toll on Christmas tree farms in British Columbia and beyond. Other then a few days of above average temperature a few years ago, where is the “climate change” in this region? Sad to see tradition go, but it's time to acknowledge/accept that tree farms as they currently operate are not a sustainable part of the natural environment. I guess selective harvesting may be a solution. Less profitable of course... Cancel Christmas?
