The effects of climate change are taking a toll on Christmas tree farms in British Columbia and beyond, with one forestry expert saying the sector that's already shrinking and shifting will need to adapt in the coming years.

The trees take eight to 12 years to reach the size most people are looking for, and young seedlings are particularly vulnerable to climate risks, said Richard Hamelin, head of the forest conservation sciences department at the University of B.C.

The severe atmospheric rivers last fall and the so-called heat dome of 2021 that saw Lytton, B.C., break the all-time record for highest daily temperature ever recorded in Canada have both been linked to the effects of climate change. "Just like humans, when we are stressed or when we're more tired, we're more susceptible to diseases," said Hamelin. "Well, trees are the same way. So all this added stress from all this heat and flooding make the trees more susceptible to pests and pathogens."

The closures continued, with Statistics Canada data showing the total area of Christmas tree farms shrunk by nearly 20,000 acres between 2011 and 2021. Rather than opening for just six weeks in the winter, farms can look at diversifying their operations to grow crops like lavender, host activities such as yoga retreats or incorporate pumpkin picking as Brennan's own farm has done, she said.

It's almost like this barbaric 20th century 'tradition' of annually cutting down billions of trees for no damn reason is archaic and should die.

Humans affecting Christmas trees in B.C. And beyond: expert

🤣…..🤡🌍

Climate Change is the New Covid

The same media and politicians that lied to you about Covid also want you to believe them about climate change. Lol.

Luckily my cousin terry has a wide stock of (permitted) fraser firs that he is selling out of his backyard if anyone needs

So are sawmills

LOLOL... PPL know that the 'experts' who find climate change is real are paid millions in grants to find it.. LOL Its the biggest cash cow next to the c19 lie..

Climate change affects female trees, LGBTQP trees and trees of colour most.

Oh shut up

Your experts are Jews with an agenda

Lol. Pure nonsense.

Maybe a little racism too.

Trees benefit from carbon dioxide, it makes them grow faster and makes them more drought resistant, that is the actual science, a localize drought in a drought prone area is not proof of a global trend. stop this foolish pseudo religious propaganda

read the article folks. Science has all the 'answers' They want to import GMO Xmas trees & other drought resistant trees from across the globe. U really think Nature wants U to take drought resistant non native trees from India or Africa & plant them in BC? Invasive bugs included

If they don't say this shit the government won't give them more money for CLIMATE CHANGE research. That's it. Biggest scam in history.

FO with your climate change bs.

Climate change is a hoax

I call BS.

Wow. These stories really upset the science deniers. Lol. So angry.

Article gives many reasons that aren't climate related. eg, 'Since the trees take about a decade to reach the desired size, the closure of tree farms in Canada and the United States during the 2008 recession is now being felt.' OK article. Just a dumb climate crisis headline..

Sure. Whatever you say 👍

Not enough carbon in the air from the lockdowns.

Racist trees die of climate change, transpeople suffer the most, study finds.

It has to do with the decline in the magnetosphere coupled with a solar maximum.. but if you want to blame cow farts, go ahead.

Then don’t use them. We need to stop fear mongering on the climate. I guess not as it makes too much money.

Climate change affecting how we chop of trees?

More fear.

What nonsensical dribble

Actually it has more to do with the last two years having more people staying home rather than traveling. Since they were home more and more people ended up cutting down their trees and this depleted the supply. Source: Directly from the tree farm 2 minutes from my house

Running out of fear porn are ya?

This is nonsense and a globalist money grab.

Oh no, hopefully the fainting couch is nearby:

Fun fact. That study that said “97% of climate scientists agree”. Well that study was debunked. The expert author misrepresented the data and won’t release the raw data. The study is cook et al. Constant lies.

Flying around the world for trade makes Trudeau 1 twit.

Written by AL Gore?

'Experts'🙄 😆 😜 😜

Judges, lawyers and cops are proof that there is no rule of law in Canada. They do things that would put normal people in jail or have consequences. Local media has ignored this problem ruthlessly and helped these bad actors stay hidden. For example:

An expert like Imgrund, Fisman or Furness? And no I'm not going to open it to find out. I want to go a day without being lied to.

Yeah definitely less trees in BC 🙄
