Nationals leader David Littleproud has delivered a broadside at the Albanese government's appointment of Matt Kean as the chair of Australia’s Climate Change Authority, declaring it a “political stunt”.The appointment of former NSW Liberal MP Matt Kean as chair of Australia's Climate Change Authority “diminishes the standing” of the institution, Nationals leader David Littleproud has said.
His comments are at odds with his previous endorsement of nuclear in an interview with Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell in 2021. The Nationals leader also criticised Mr Kean over his apparent bias toward renewables in attacking Australia's energy transition. Mr Littleproud’s comments come as fellow Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce decried Mr Kean as “treacherous” and told Sky News’ Kieran Gilbert the former NSW Liberal treasurer “should have joined the Labor Party in the start”.
In June 2021, Mr Kean said he was hopeful nuclear energy would be present in Australia’s power grid, a position he is now at odds with. "Into the future, will nuclear have a role to play? I think so and I hope so but right now I can’t bet on technology that isn’t readily available."
