Seven bucks for a latte? Coffee prices soar to ‘silly’ levels in the GTA – but consumers keep paying. Supply chain challenges, inflation and even climate change have driven a massive rise in the cost of your morning buzz.

When Elizabeth Allen popped into a Starbucks in downtown Toronto recently, she was not prepared for the sticker shock.

Even before the pandemic, extreme weather patterns were driving up wholesale coffee prices, Carter said. In 2021, Brazil — home of the world’s largest coffee crop and one of the main countries Canada imports its beans from — suffered a once-in-a-century drought and severe frost, which slashed crop yields, driving up prices. Colombia, the world’s second-largest exporter, was also hit by drought.

Carlos Gutierrez, who owns Calgary-based company Single Origin Coffee, which supplies beans to Western Canadian roasters, says rising costs and supply chain interruptions have taken a toll on his business. When asked how much prices have increased in Canada over the last year, Starbucks Canada declined to comment but said that the company factors in “increasing inflation as well as wage, customer demand and other costs,” into its pricing strategy.
