China’s export ban will not derail the West’s clean energy push, but it could certainly slow it.The Chinese Ministry of Commerce, together with other departments, said in a note on Dec. 30 that it was seeking public comments to a revised catalogue of technologies that cannot be exported from China.

Export restrictions would include technologies used to produce large-size solar panel silicon wafers, black silicon and ultra-efficient silicon ingots, according to Chinese media reports. China controls 79% of the production of polysilicon used for solar panels, 97% of the production of solar wafers, 85% of solar cells and 75% of the manufacturing process to assemble cells in modules, according to an International Energy Agency report published in July 2022.Opinions expressed are those of the author.
