Britain on Thursday formally lifted a moratorium on fracking for shale gas that has been in place since 2019, saying strengthening the country's energy supply was an 'absolute priority'.

More research needed to assess risk of tremors

Energy prices have soared in Europe after Russia invaded Ukraine, and Britain is subsidising bills for households and businesses at a predicted cost of more than 100 billion pounds . Fracking, which has been opposed by environmental groups and some local communities, was banned after the industry regulator said it was not possible to predict the magnitude of earthquakes it might trigger., had the most advanced fracking wells in Britain and found a natural gas resource, but the rules around earth tremors meant its operations had to keep halting, meaning that neither of its two wells could be fully flow-tested.

After this, the government introduced a traffic-light system which suspended work if seismic activity of 0.5 or above on the Richter scale was detected, a level scientists said would need to be increased if Britain is to develop a fracking industry.

Plan to cut Ethereum energy use sees miners switch cryptocurrenciesA radical update to the Ethereum cryptocurrency launched last week was supposed to reduce energy consumption by 99 per cent, but the savings have failed to materialise as miners evicted from the network flock to other currencies. WTF does that have to do w/ Ethereum? as expected. Seriously, did anyone thought that miners will be like: 'oh! one big cryptocurrency is not available, let's sell our ASICs for the price of scrap metal' ? Highly doubt that. Judging by the flood of used GPU for sale right now, surely a big portion of miners definitely stopped, making ethereum’s switch to PoS quite significant.
