Many people will feel the pinch

A typical household could have to pay up to £3,549 a year for gas and electric after an announcement by energy regular Ofgem. The price cap placed on energy bills will rise to the new limits from October 1 - a hike branded "scary" by Northampton locals today.

With bills potentially rising to £6000 next year, Northants Live took the streets of Northampton to ask residents how they feel about the price rises and whether they think the government should be doing more.Mr Right, 88, is retired and lives on Harborough Road, Kingsthorpe, with his wife. While he says he can afford the price hike, he worries for those that cannot.

"They can help us with our bills and that, which I think they've promised to do anyway." After being told the government's financial support package, Mr Right said, "Well that's substantial and it will help; though that would keep me in fags for about a week." Charlotte is eligible for the two instalments of £650 the government is promising. "I suppose it's a little bit to help isn't it? But everyone sort of has to pay their way somehow."Charlotte said she is "maybe" worried about affording to heat her home this winter. "But my daughter is priority."

Matthew admitted he was scared too, but added: "It's less pressure for me because I'm a single person on my own, so I don't have the responsibility of a household. It's scarier for families but I think individuals will also have to work a lot harder."
