Australians love an extra-big hatch, interior space and a bit of height in a car. The Mercedes-AMG EQE electric SUV delivers on all.

The impressive Mercedes-AMG EQE electric sedan has gained a new stablemate and, just to keep everyone on their toes, it has the same name. There are four versions of the Mercedes-AMG EQE electric SUV at launch.

The EQE 300 has a single motor and rear-drive, the 350 has all-wheel drive as does the 500 . With each variant, the power and torque increases markedly, as does the price. The flagship is the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 at just under $190,000 plus on-road costs, and we sampled a left-hand drive version of this in advance of the local launch. The EQE 53 normally boasts 460 kW and 950 Nm, enough to propel it to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds.

The EQE is a bit shorter than the petrol equivalent but the packaging advantages of a battery drivetrain enabled the designers to make it roomier. It’s significantly heavier than the petrol equivalent though, and also a not insignificant 165 kilograms heftier than the EQE sedan.
