Expert analysis of nuclear power in Australia and the experience of countries overseas suggests the Coalition may have to spend $60 billion on its energy plan.

Already a subscriber?Recent overseas experience suggests an Australian nuclear energy program would be vulnerable to delays and cost blowouts – the construction of Britain’s latest plant is years behind schedule and modular technology is still not commercially viable.

NSW Premier Chris Minns told parliament on Thursday the state’s Department of Climate Change, Energy and Environment had estimated that it would cost $70 billion for large-scale nuclear reactors to replace the 8300 megawatts of a coal-fired power station. Small modular reactor technology would be built at Port Augusta in South Australia and Collie in Western Australia.

“The timescale involved to get this up and running, the sort of energy system we’re really contemplating, what this would actually look like is very unclear,” he said.“The small modular reactors just don’t exist yet in any commercial form at the moment. And there’s no cost yet being provided.”
