Peter Dutton’s nuclear energy plan could win support from communities concerned about major infrastructure upgrades needed to get solar and wind power into the grid.

Banana Shire mayor Neville Ferrier said the policy was being cautiously received in Queensland’s Capricorn region, where locals were concerned about unsightly infrastructure needed to connect solar and wind assets to the grid.

Cr Ferrier said he was concerned about how a plant would be decommissioned, based on research from Europe. Cr Duff said renewable energy projects were causing divisions in the community, and called on the Queensland opposition to reconsider its objections to nuclear.Advertisement Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick called Mr Dutton’s proposal badly misguided, and accused state opposition leader David Crisafulli of being too weak to take on his federal colleagues.NSW Premier Chris Minns will not co-operate with plans to overturn existing bans on nuclear power.

Mr Thomas, whose electorate takes in Collie, home to the Muja power station, said the state energy market could not absorb output from a large-scale nuclear plant, which left the option of a much more inefficient small modular nuclear reactor.
