Porsche's 1st electric model, the 2020 Taycan has been revealed—and while it meets performance expectations for the brand, it fall well short of Tesla in efficiency and range

The Taycan is a four-door sedan that is nearly identical in length and width to the Model S and a couple of inches lower. At 195.4-inches long, it’s slightly smaller all around than the Panamera and also slightly quicker than the turbocharged V8 version. Unlike the five-door hatchback Panamera, the Taycan has a conventional trunk although its fast-back profile is surprisingly similar to it’s gasoline-fueled sibling.

Like the Audi e-Tron Quattro, the Taycan battery uses pouch-style cells which remain unidentified, but are almost certainly sourced from LG Chem since they are the only major cell maker producing this type. The aluminum pack frame is a load bearing element of the car’s structure and features a cooling system bonded to the bottom to manage temperature. A total of 396 cells are arranged in 33 modules of 12 cells each.

For all practical purposes, a range of over 200 miles is probably going to be more than sufficient, especially since most Taycans will likely spend their working lives trundling along in traffic in South Beach, Beverly Hills or Silicon Valley, rarely ever used to their full potential.Nonetheless, it’s disheartening to see every other premium BEV coming to market with such relatively poor energy efficiency compared to Tesla.

The front motor uses a single speed co-axial planetary reduction gear similar to the Jaguar i-Pace. At the rear, Porsch has incorporated a two-speed gear-box for better low-speed acceleration and high speed efficiency.
