'Why are electric cars more expensive?' And more of your questions answered

How much does it cost to run an electric car? How can I get a charging point when I don't have a driveway? Are they really better for the environment?

Sarah: What happens to electric car batteries at the end of their life? Are they sent to landfill to pollute in a different way? The batteries are then incinerated at high temperatures and roughly 50% of each battery, including critical elements such as the cobalt and nickel, can be recovered. In the UK, one waste management firm that I contacted, Cawleys, operates a service to safely collect, dismantle EV battery packs and work out which ones are good enough to be reused and which should be sent abroad for recycling.are leading UK research to develop more sophisticated techniques to recycle electric vehicle batteries. But in short, recycling electric vehicle batteries in Britain is a work in progress. Some common concerns about electric cars explained.

More charging infrastructure, especially for areas with no off-street parking is coming but it will take time and how fast it arrives on your street is, to some extent, a post-code lottery.Theo: There are currently 31.5 million cars on the road in Britain, according to the DVLA - and 31 million of them are still petrol or diesel powered. If we are to replace all of them with electric models, of course we will need plenty of power.

BBC_HaveYourSay Easy answer, new technology always has a price hike. If you consider 8k TVs screens are north of 5k, then you’ll appreciate that a lot of this is down to RND. The same applies to EVs, give it a decade and you’ll see the price dramatically lower.

I bought a cheap electric car for £3,250 and I charge it at work. I do 20 miles each way, 200 per week and 800 per month. Over two years it is has covered 20,000 miles. It's had two MOT's and a pair of windscreen wipers. Car has paid for itself in the fuel saving.

and this is a better explanation, which appears to be by someone that actually has an EV

Well they expensive to buy yes... but extremely cheap to run! It costs me £1.50/night to recharge and drive it 100 miles next day. Incredible isn't it?

What happens if you're driving along and the cable isn't long enough pulling the plug out of the socket?

BBC_HaveYourSay Toffs keep the poor off roads simple clensing.

When it came to buying my current car I was completely priced out of the electric alternative by a £70 battery fee that was put on top of the finance. Ultimately I had to go with a petrol city car as I couldn't afford the additional fee.

BBC_HaveYourSay basic economics.

It`snot all about the price most electric car batterys have a poor lifespan and arfter about 5 years the charge drops of and range falls, resell become a problem as to replace the batterypack cost as much as a new car.

I was looking at an Electric car the other day. Battery wasn't included, there was a compulsory lease on the battery. That lease cost more than my monthly fuel just now. Companies should have to sell the whole vehicle. If they don't, people should be allowed to shop around.

Have to say. That cable stretched around the back like that is a bit of a hazard and annoyance if you have your hands full and just want to put something in the boot

Brought my Nissan Lead 2nd hand 3 years ago for £8k with 6k miles on the clock. Have never had any issue have saved around £7k in fuel, tax and service costs so it has nearly paid for itself by now. Have never had an issue charging at home or using the network.

So, 'currently' 'basic' electric cars -cost min £30k+ -have ranges of c150 miles -max 10yr battery life -are charged using electricity 50% generated by fossil fuel -IF facilities are available/practical at all, even for home use -take min 30 mins to charge OK. Update me in 10yrs

And do you realise that if we went electric, because of reduced range and charging time we would need service stations every mile along motorways (20 times more!).

And why still using ridiculous extensions leads to charge? Because they still use batteries! Supercaps will make them cheaper & lighter but energy companies blocking progress... but they can’t stop private companies developing tech, & avoid corrupt Patent system!

The tipping point has not been reached yet economically. £15000-£20000 for a small car and a range of 300 miles and people will go electric instantly...

Because car manufacturers deliberately keep prices high by giving buyers the impression that 'eco friendly ' costs more than a standard car. Electric cars are simpler in design. No engine. Simpler drive train. No catalytic converter. And more. So why more expensive. A con.

Because we are being ripped off

The UK as usual is very slow to create the necessary infrastructure. Every petrol station should have a charging point by law, the petrochemical industry has dragged its feet, purposely to slow the uptake of EVs. Battery tech is moving forward quickly, see Formula E.

Powered by fossil fuels and nuclear energy. If they are truely going green then these points and the ones at home should be solely powered by solar energy

Because the people who have the monopoly of the crude oil, are the same that owns the license for the electric cars.

Eco_Couriers What the hell is that vehicle.... Not exactly a Tesla now is it.... Typical Bbc rubbish

Has anyone done a comparison between petrol, electric and hydrogen powered cars including time to fill up and annual fuel costs?

Simply because the makers are creaming off the savings in fuel costs for themselves.. I will never buy an electric car until they are cheaper than petrol, after all they are only an electric motor and a few batteries, should be cheap to buy..

Do we really need another Don the Con, Boris the Bafoon, on this side of the pond?

I can't afford a new one and I would not buy a second hand one.

MINI as with all UK electric vehicles their new addition costs TOO MUCH!!! People are FORCED to buy petrol as alternatives are not competitive!! £24,400, or a monthly 'lease' of £299 So £112 a month MORE than a car that’s much bigger! BBCOxford ElectricCarCosts

because we live in a capitalistic world-our train of thought is towards the corporate giants and their profit margins-petrol motor is in the driving seat-we need to change our train of thought-it's coming but they won't give up without a bloody battle.

When assessing the cost you need to take into account the fuel saving, which in my case has been £5147 over the last 6 months / 32,000 miles.

Stupidity all electric cars the way this country is they’d be a blackout every evening

If we all had electric cars how would we power them? Intermittent renewables won't cut it.

£39000 for a small Nissan, you could buy a Ford Mustang for that money.

More pollution comes from recycling and even making the batteries which also have a very short life span before needing replaced !!this is nothing but a con jumped on by the nettle munching tree huggers whom most of them can’t drive anyway

Because of all the batteries which cost a fortune and the cost of shipping batteries makes them not green its a con

Look at the picture to see what is the problem with this means of propulsion: strange how 'progress' looks like a tethered horse.

Its a con. They should be cheaper. The batteries are expensive and very toxic/bad for the environment, but Islington luvvies buy them to send out virtue signals, so the prices are pitched at them.

Yes expensive

Sales don’t matter, fact is we cannot use what we’ve been using forever, simple. It's by no means clear how much of a difference that amount of money would make... Electric isn’t the answer for a lot of people.
