Thousands of climate protesters took over the streets of Melbourne. 9News

Thousands of climate protesters took over the streets of Melbourne today to demand strong environmental action by the federal government.

A group called Extinction Rebellion hosted a climate rally at Victoria's Parliament House before leading a march through the streets. "We’re very disappointed in the conservative government that doesn’t respond to climate and has been re-elected," said spokesperson Miriam Robinson.She estimates that at least 2,000 demonstrators took part in the rally which included people lying "dead" on the ground to represent the extinction of all of Earth's species.

A Victoria Police spokesperson told nine.com.au that there were no incidents or breaches of peace at the rally.Victoria Police set up a number of traffic management points with Bourke, Swanston, Collins and Flinders streets affected at various times from 12pm until 3pm.
