The role will involve building partnerships between Australia and other countries to deliver renewable energy solutions, beginning with an industry delegation to China next month.

"Australia can and must be a renewables and critical minerals powerhouse, working closely with other nations to help decarbonise the global economy, and with the Smart Energy Council, I look forward to helping make that a reality," Palaszczuk said in a statement today.Former Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been appointed International Ambassador to the Smart Energy Council.

Resource-rich and historically reliant on carbon-based industries, Queensland now has some of Australia's most ambitious renewable energy targets of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030, 70 per cent by 2032 and 80 per cent by 2035. Smart Energy Council CEO John Grimes lauded Palaszczuk as a "great Australian" with an "extraordinary record of service and achievement."

Palaszczuk was Premier of Queensland for eight years, the longest-serving female leader in Australian history.
