A decision to scrap a $650 million solar thermal energy project in South Australia has left lingering questions about the future of the technology.

SolarReserve runs a similar plant — Crescent Dunes in the United States — whereDr Pye said there was data showing its performance was under a cloud.

"This is very far away from the operating conditions a traditional fossil fuel power station has to deal with, so there are important technical challenges the companies in this sector have been trying to overcome." "The day we were there, it was working very well, so the technology is fundamentally sound," he said. The State Government will put out a new tender for its electricity supply contract, but has not ruled out a fresh bid based on SolarReserve's solar thermal project.

If the people who dig up ores also smelted them on site in the sunny parts of Aus then such an installation could be viable, but it is so much easier to just ship off the magic dirt to another country and let them process it so we don't see value adding here as much as we should.

Eventually, science and the majority of folk will acknowledge there is only one power source that will meet the needs of consumers now and into the future, nuclear generated power. It just takes time for realisation to set in.

Evidently people really do not want solar ect otherwise they would have invested. Where are all the environmental warriors happy to use others money instead of digging into their own pockets

Only if government’s support is not forthcoming. The SA Libs own this failure.
