Floods, avalanches and landslides are more likely in the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard, which houses the Global Seed Vault.

The home of the"Doomsday vault" - which stores the world's most precious seeds in case of a global disaster - is under threat from climate change, scientists have warned.

Temperatures in the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard, which houses the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, could rise by up to 10C before the end of the century, according to a new report. The change in conditions over the next century will increase the likelihood of floods, avalanches and landslides in the area, it warned.

Inger Hanssen-Bauer, senior researcher at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and editor of the report, said the climate in Svalbard's capital Longyearbyen is probably warming faster than in any other town on Earth. The annual mean temperature in Longybearbyen in 1900 was -7.8C and since then, it has risen by 3.7C - more than three times the global average of about 1C , she told CNN.

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which is just outside Longyearbyen, was opened in 2008 to act as a back-up in case of a global catastrophe.

Yep, it looks very warm in Svalbard. Thought the whole idea of storing seeds under a mountain was to protect them from all sort of events. Sounds like more scaremongering.

Not built for purpose, should get a refund

Well according to experts the north poll should have melted and gone by 2013🤔.

Bummer

Does their electricity and heating in non-storage areas produce cold or heat? If it produces heat it will melt the ice. That's how thermodynamics works in this universe

Well then it’s not working too well.

Need to build it on the moon

Bad planning.
