40% of us are cutting back on use of every day appliances in a bid shave money off household bills, research shows

Some of the least efficient models are a whopping 3,000 watts and now cost £1.02 an hour to run compared to 63p last February, according to figures from price comparison site Go Compare. Even one of the more cost-efficient models now costs 68p an hour to run compared to 42p an hour this time last year.

The average dishwasher is between 1,050 and 1,500 watts. While last February they would have cost between 22.5p and 31.5p an hour to run, this has risen to between 35.7p and 51p an hour this month.Catherine Griggs says that she is using her appliances less to keep her bills down “Kettle and toaster usage – the big spenders – is limited to mornings and lunchtime. I don’t bother with ironing and only use the microwave occasionally.

“Cutting down on using electrical appliances is often something we suggest as part of our behavioural advice to people who call us, but since the energy price hike most people who call us are already doing these things, so the type of energy advice we’re giving is shifting,” he explained.

Yep. I use the washing machine and vacuum less often, I don't use the tumble drier/dish washer at all. I've Turned the fridge/freezer down a notch. I drink less tea/coffee, and watch TV shows and films via catch-up apps on a my tablet rather than the TV.
