The festive trees take eight to 12 years to reach the size most people look for, and young seedlings are particularly vulnerable to climate risks, said Richard Hamelin, head of the forest conservation sciences department at the University of B.C.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Record-breaking atmospheric rivers of rain caused extensive flooding throughout southwestern B.C. in November 2021, but Shirley Brennan, the executive director of the Canadian Christmas Trees Association, said farmers in the province reported their seedlings mostly appeared fine and the extreme heat had been much harder on the trees.“Right now the seedlings look OK, but it’s whether or not the root system is strong enough to grow into that tree, and that’s what we don’t know,” Brennan said.
The difference, Brennan said, is the extreme, unseasonable nature of recent droughts and other climate-related events, including intense late-spring frosts in Nova Scotia in 2018 followed by eastern Ontario and western Quebec in 2020. “Just like humans, when we are stressed or when we’re more tired, we’re more susceptible to diseases. Well, trees are the same way,” he said. “All this added stress from all this heat and flooding make the trees more susceptible to pests and pathogens.”
The closures have continued since then. Data from Statistics Canada shows the total area of Christmas tree farms shrunk by nearly 20,000 acres between 2011 and 2021. He pointed to some options that could help Christmas tree farmers weather the effects of climate change, including genetically selecting and breeding the strongest trees among classic Canadian speciesor importing different species from parts of the world where fir trees are better adapted to sweltering heat, such as Turkey.
Between yellow, orange & red, we’re in a semi permanent state of 'weatherlertness'. If the weather is good we’re all going to die in the medium term, if it’s bad we’re going to die in the short term. Weatherlertness New word for 2023?
Record breaking cold temperatures in many parts of the Western world, breaking dumps of snow, another 5foot dump in California, are you sure we are having rising temperatures? Sounds to me like the Ice Age is still on the table
Experts not likely just opinions
Be better than this click bait crap . Time to unfollow you...
More BS.
How many times must the “experts” be wrong before the media acknowledges their limited knowledge and value?
I think it’s more like people don’t want to wait 10 years for a return on the investment why don’t you try that as a headline
I LOVE THE LIBERAL FINDED MEDIA. CALGARY HERALD GO LEARN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE FROM JORDAN PETERSON.
Of Course it's from Climate Change.
I am so tired of this climate change agenda.
clearly, this is local short term variability, and long term trends over larger regions show nothing of the sort. This is cherry picking data. What happened to balanced reporting: probably such folks have gone extinct due to climate change.
What a liad of BS..the climate scam!!
Banning real Christmas trees is next. Let’s all buy artificial ones… what are they made from again?
Trees HATE CO2!!!
No worries… Trudeau has a tax for this … it’s working isn’t itX

Cue those educated by youtube telling us how much of an expert they are on climate change.
It's climate and it changes. Get over it.
Yeah all that carbon in the air is bad for them, even though carbon is like plant food.
Experts say media are of crap, fear mongering , scaring people with fake science. Experts say media should be arrested.
Trees are growing faster.
