The federal government has unveiled an ambitious road map to make Canada a critical minerals powerhouse, describing a “generational opportunity” to spur economic growth, fight climate change and advance global security and Indigenous reconciliation.

with supplies of minerals and energy as the world shifts away from fossil fuels that cause climate change.

Business groups were quick to applaud the new strategy on Friday. Mining Association of Canada president Pierre Gratton described it as a welcome industrial strategy that — if executed — could expand Canada’s position in sectors that use critical minerals, like electric vehicle battery manufacturing.

Pulling from around $3.8 billion in funds earmarked in this year’s federal budget, as well as money from 2021 and signals that more could be coming, the strategy focuses on six initial “priority” minerals that are associated with electric vehicle batteries: lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, copper and rare earth elements. It promises to use more than $270 million from the last two budgets to expand critical mineral exploration. It also underscores how this year’s budget promised $1.

For Gratton, this will be the “hardest part of the strategy,” given long-standing demands from industry for a more streamlined review process for proposed projects. He noted the government will also have to balance the desire for speed with the necessity to ensure environmental checks and the involvement of affected Indigenous communities.

Someone need to explain to these very smart people how electricity/batteries work and how inefficient they are in cold weather..

And the pollution, CO2 emissions this creates, please? Hypocrites on a huge scale. Oh, taxes will clean up the emissions, I forgot!

LOL

Canadahas NO strategy,it simply CANNOT have a strategy because the electrical grid simply isnt design for would take decades to rebuild the entire system.EV never was a solution.Hydrogen is where its & its only being delayed by lobbyists

What is the carbon foot print when you manufacture one EV car battery?

Drill for oil? Nah... huge open pit Mines? Sure... oh canada...

They have failed at each individually so now they will bundle it together cost us far more and fail even harder

Generational opportunity means dig massive holes in the ground

In other words: Canada can satisfy both the economic disparity created by irresponsible governments and their vapid ideology by becoming a global mining colony...

do you guys have no shame? federal govt is INCOMPETENT. They are spewing lies, making stupid promises and making themselves and their friends rich while Canadians are getting poor. Where is the integrity of press? no wonder legacy media is laughed at

Wilkinson was a clown when he worked for the Saskatchewan NDP, now he’s a corrupt clown.

People who own EV cars will spend a fuck load of money charging their cars/trucks this winter. good luck in -20 degree weather.

If the liberals are proposing it we can’t afford it

😆 sure ya do

If the liberals are proposing it we can’t afford it!

Mining precious metals for EV batteries is far more devastating to the environment than a well maintained, fuel efficient gas vehicle. Especially considering the those batteries need to be replaced every few years.

Shut up

Recyclable batteries? Or batteries that fill a landfill or a parking lot somewhere?
