Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen says even the Howard government’s Switkowski report acknowledged that given nuclear energy is the most expensive form of energy, it would be more expensive to start from scratch in Australia.

“Peter Dutton has decided to bank all his energy policy on that, he says he wants a ‘chat’ with the Australian people about it –

okay, let’s have the chat, Peter. Explain where the small modular reactors will go, explain why you want the most expensive form of energy.”

It doesn't matter what you start it's going to be expensive but not as expensive as renewables over the long run. Everything wears out renewables do it more often.

Typical Labor dragging out costings from decades ago

Does the UN throw in a free set of steak knives with every donation? Try building some flood mitigation infrastructure akin the SE Asia e.g monsoonal drains and harvest the water

Climate change and Energy Minister WTF is that make believe title

Why don't you ask private investors. Pretty sure the snowy mountain scheme wasn't cheap either was it.

Bowen will sink Australia....but at least the rich inner city elites can afford his policies. They should tax all inner city residents who earn over $150000 a year to subsidize those who didn't vote for his crazy.

blackoutBowen

He doesn’t want to invest in nuclear as it will be a few years before we see the intended benefits. Only cares about short term solutions and not what’s best for Australian energy crisis and our economy.

Ever heard of the ''back to basics'' principle when resolving issues. It simply works in any given situation TRY IT BOWEN!

At the time it would have been more expensive because we had plenty of coal and gas. Enough to export loads of it. This guy is an embarrassment to the Labor party.

If you believe Bowen, you might as well eat fish food and act like a fish.

Forget using uranium, instead build Thorium fueled, Liquid Salt, Nuclear Reactors which don't create radioactive waste, CO2 or Micro Particulates while providing cheap Base Load Electricity 24 / 7 / 365 for more than 20 years.

Honestly who listens to this energy minister proved before he was useless All on taxpayers money ,he's made a fortune out of the taxpayers money

Compared to the obscene waste already pumped into unreliables.

How Chris Bowen gets any job involving responsibility is totally beyond me.

That report came out 12 years ago, a lot has changed since then, ask the rest of the world.

How the hell would you know, chris bowen

Bulldust ! Nuclear at least an assurance of Base Load Power.

Dont let the truth get in way of the facts Chris. Isnt there a lot more maintenance, therefore more union jobs, in renewable wind and solar energy, which is the form of energy you are constantly pushing? You are destroying future generations whilst lining your own pockets.

Chris the Clown Bowen 🤡

This from the guy who couldn't stop the boats and didn't know our tax scales who overnight is a nuclear energy expert. Chris, nuclear power is used around the world, how is that starting from scratch?

Even if this was true, which it is not. It would still be worthwhile doing unlike wind and solar.

Bowenchris technology gets cheaper over time. They finished in 2007. No different to your solar strategy. How are you energy minister? muppet .

Such a clueless drip of a person!

Times have moved on dipstick. This guy is a clown.

Honestly what the hell would Bumbling Bowen know & you would trust the idiot at your peril ! How come all major Countries use nuclear ☢️ power & Australia 🇦🇺 with abundant supplies don’t ?

Yeah because the filthy little grubs can’t fleece money for other hair brain “green energy” scams. The sooner we rediscover Nikola Tesla’s work the better.

Bowen must be using the same expertise that he used with boat arrivals.

Not doing it will be even more expensive, but only for the poor.

Australia being only 1% of global emissions should continue using our own coal to produce low cost, reliable energy. The biggest contribution we could make to reducing global emissions is to scale back on coal exports to significant overpopulated emitters like China and India.

It would cost trillions to implement and maintain. What is the benefit in that?

Lame excuse. It’s common knowledge the downfalls of unreliables. If this side of politics didn’t keep playing politics with nuclear and actually realised if you want reliable and emission free power, nuclear is a viable alternative. The upfront costs of power plants are high…

Thats funny I was just thinking his small modular pen1s is unrealistic and unreasonable

Show us the figures. Can't imagine Huge environment damaging wind turbines & massive batteries will be cheap as well as the infrastructure needed to transport the power.

😂 just outright lying, that is the Bowen way, interesting that Labor claim to still be going ahead with the SSN’s 🤔

What about the 2b dollar desalinisation plant that is there when we need it why do we care about money for basic human needs like power and water this is what we need to live and thrive. Australian should invest in Nuclearpower

IGA doesn't stock them any more 🤪

Meanwhile

That is not true , new technologies in nuclear makes it more economical. Hopefully we will enter a mini ice age and shut these greenies up.

So just use coal

Disgusting little man. Playing pathetic career politics to the detriment of the Australian people to whom he should be working in their best interest.

It may expensive to implement, however it is by far more reliable and sustainable and once in operation it will prove to be far cheaper and more efficient. Renewables will complement the the use of fossil and nuclear fuels.

Surely 'expense' becomes less of an issue when there is no viable option.

Switkowski report was 2006. Lot of technological improvements over 16 years. We have a reactor at Lucas Heights near Sydney. New sodium salts cooling in modern reactors make these very safe. We are a large exporter of uranium.

Who’s voting for this clown?

This goose is using old nuclear costs and production to argue against SMR. Renewables were so expensive that it required billions in tax payer support. This dangerous science denier needs to step back and stop misleading people so he can continue his crusade.

As usual, Australia is years if not decades behind the rest of the world. Just look at Europe and their Green transition failures meaning they're restarting coal plants due to lack of baseload associated with renewables !!! To think these issues wont happen here is moronic !!

Is this the climate and energy minister for Russia?

'Start from scratch'? Yeah, first a round thing that rolls must be invented!

Bowen on those days we did not have mobile phones - life changes DH - you want to live in the pass and rip off taxpayers again with

Since when has AlboMP and Labor ever cared about public money..?!?

So it’s better to pollute the planet with fossil fuels, because that’s what you will HAVE to do as renewables are nowhere near ready to replace fossile fuels.

There are already nuclear reactors, ready to be installed into our old coal fired power stations, just need to wire them up.

What qualifications does he have?

Just like all projects you have to start somewhere and we started down the nuclear energy road decades ago when we started mining/supplying yellow cake to the world & ignored ourselves.

Can I just take over from the “minister”. Pretty sure the average person isn’t buying his lies.

He just wants to criss cross the country in wires .

Surely it wouldn't be 'starting from scratch' as nuclear power has been used in many countries and there are companies that could bring that expertise to Australia!

Hilarious, how you going to do that. like a domestic reserve on lng exports perhaps?
