'A good rule of thumb is if it makes things hot, then it uses a lot of electricity' - here's some top tips for reducing energy consumption

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland says savings can be made by not leaving appliances on standby mode and being mindful about how and when to use them.

Defrost your freezer regularly. The SEAI recommends to do it every six months to help it run efficiently.Use a low temperature setting and an eco-setting, if it has one.Use a lower temperature of 30 degrees and wait until you have a full load before turning it on, but don't overload it.Avoid using a tumble dryer if possible. Instead use a clothes horse or, if the weather allows, hang washing outdoors. If the dryer has to be used, turn it on during off-peak hours and keep the filters clean.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland says a heating bill could be reduced by 10% by lowering room temperature by just one degree.Close doors between rooms that are heated and unheated to keep the heat in. Meanwhile, according to bonkers.ie, to reduce water heating costs by up to 30% you need to make sure your tank is properly insulated with a three-inch thick lagging jacket.

Great elitist advice when you have such expensive looking kitchens and appliances ..🤔. What about the majority who live in dated kitchens and use dated devices ?

Ok, repeat after me, we the people are not the problem…. Greedy energy companies, and corrupt politicians are the problem

Best way to keep prices down is to stop voting FFFG

Not opening your fridge door and cooking in the microwave are pathetic 'tips'.

Fridges do not take 45 minutes to re-cool after being open for 20 seconds. That’s not how phone chargers work. And I’d be nervous about killing the power to a smart TV while it’s in stand by mode. Most TVs today consume less than 5 watts a year in standby. Shut it down carefully.

Good advice but I have been doing all them things already .People not hanging out washing to dry is a big problem putting it straight into tumble dryers. This happens more in the Posh areas as they worry what the neighbour s think

Wow its just like being a child in 80s again! We did all those things and still do, hence where keeping doors closed in an Irish hse is common, but i disagree with the oven - use it, use it, use it and heat the room after. Dont leave heat off in room entirely or brings damp

great not one bit patronising

My father used to say CLOSE the doors we don’t own the ESB. A man before his time 😂😂😂

Common s€ns€ ⚡️🌍

If we all cut our electricity usage in half the ESB will have to increase the price per unit to cover their costs. Anybody able to do the calculation?

I can't understand all this scare mongering about an energy crisis Our gov.knows what it's doing, trying to wean us off fossil fuels and prepare us for zero emissions.I know bill will be high, people will be cold and some may even die but its for a good cause, saving the planet.

Shame on RTE again. Make sure to cover the protest on the 24th won’t you.

Very patronising

Yah, trying to find a way of getting rid of fffgg which will save me a fortune, do you have any suggestions rte?

Turn of the telly - saves headspace and energy!

what a load of crap

How patronising, it’s like an energy saving guide for people with intellectual disabilities.

Great tips for the people that needed to be shown how to wash their hands.

'To conserve water & protect the sewage system, discontinue using toilets & toilet roll. Wipe using your hands at the designated pit latrine facility in your area. And remember to sing Happy Birthday twice when washing your hands. Dyaneconnor, RTE Newspeak, Nanny State.'

Don’t waste energy refrigerating fruit, as in this video.

How about we leave the EU who caused this energy crisis with their stupid sanctions on Russia without regard to the consequences of their actions.Anyone think this energy crisis will impact on our leaders. I don't think so.Can someone turn the heat off in Eamon Ryan's office.F H

Well we are doing some decorating at the moment and we are keeping all waste to burn. That will keep us warm for a while. People aren't stupid we know how to save energy. Don't treat us like idiots

What pure BS. Our government gave away our gas reserves we have no gas reserves to produce electricity. Fianna Fáil Fine Gael, green party purposely insured we do not have electricity this winter. See the proof. They sold the gas and gave the money to the EU presumably the war

Remember to keep your oven door closed!! 😂 I like cooking my crickets with the door open!! 🙈 Reduce Energy Bills by ousting the WEF muppets in government ya mean!! 🤑

You left out the neat trick of wiping 🧻 your backside in the dark, definitely a money saver. 😂😂😂. Think I will go with voting this shameful government out of office.

Omg did you ever here so much bull-s—t in all your life

Great advice close the oven door when cooking in the oven!

Get rid of FFG at the earliest opportunity to save money. With blackouts at Christmas imminent, this may happy earlier than we think.

Absolutly pathetic so-called journalism.

How about we get rid of our govt,

Your image suggests money laundering as a solution. I might give it a go…

Can we talk about this lads

I have started cooking my dinner in the kettle in the morning, living off tea for the day and dinner is done by the evening. Following ryans advise and it works so well. Thanks for the propaganda rte.

Where's the article criticising the government for doing nothing TO MAKE energy companies cap prices? What is this shit?

And if it makes things cold even more so.

Turn off rte best mental health advice

Vou fazer fogueira na sala

Is that Robert Troy's washing machine?

By money laundering 🤔

Jesus Christ RTE, who’s writing this rubbish

No articles discussing a cap on energy prices? Just goes to show who really controls Irish Media.

Are you 5 yrs old?

My girlfriend must use f**k all electricity so

Bacik: More targeted measures needed to tackle energy crisisMore targeted measures to tackle the cost of living would save the government money and help those 'most grieved', Ivana Bacik TD has said. Till she gets elected into government and its allllll forgotten Generally agree..Those most in need should be reassured by measures aimed at them! But, it's OK too to acknowledge that there's also a band of citizenry living not too far above the standard means test rules. And I not only welcome the universal energy cashback, I need it too Rember they got elected in 2011 and told lies to get it, then lied and attacked those who voted for them and started this homeless crisis ThatcherBurton

Managing energy demands 'key to avoiding blackouts'The EU Energy Commissioner has said managing energy demand will be key to avoiding blackouts in Europe this winter and citizens will have to play their part. No. 'Have to play our part'? We have no part in this crisis, we're on the receiving end of it. There is absolutely zero responsibility for this mess that falls onto us. You created it - you solve it. Can I assume that it might be more energy efficient to use a couple of electric space heaters to heat the couple of rooms a person is using rather than turn on gas fired central heating for the whole house? Never was too sure which is worse.

Taoiseach confirms plans to tax energy producers making profits 'they would never have dreamt of' | JOE.iePlans are reportedly in place to tackle the companies making money from the cost of living crisis The energy producers are foreign. He can’t tax entities abroad. What nonsense. And they just pass he taxes onto us anyway . There are as of yet NO plans from our government. They are waiting on the EU to devise a windfall tax before or even if they do anything domestically. Despite 5 years of energy crisis warnings our government continually fails to act. energybills CostOfLivingCrises 😁🤣😂 I'll believe it when I see it
