Victoria’s Essential Services Commission has written to retailers to warn them that urging customers to leave risks their state licence.

Energy retailers who have urged customers to leave as they are unable to offer competitive price plans, could lose their licence, Victoria’s energy regulator has warned.written to customers to tell them they should switch their accounts to other providersBy losing customers, small energy retailers would no longer need to purchase wholesale electricity while prices are high. When the market returns to more normalised conditions, the small retailer could return.

Regulators are also concerned that customers who leave a retailer will struggle to find alternative suppliers. Those that do, are unlikely to receive the same discounts that they enjoyed at their original retailer.Alinta Energy chief executive officer Jeff Dimery said this week he had received between six and eight calls from companies looking to pass on their customer base. He said Alinta Energy could absorb some new customers, but had limited capacity.
