Leaders of the world's 20 biggest economies have said they want 70% of the world to be vaccinated against Covid-19 over the next eight months, as they hold their first face-to-face meeting in two years this weekend in Rome. The meeting comes ahead of COP26 - a key climate conference in Scotland - which gets under way in the coming days.

Earlier, a group of former presidents and prime ministers have said the G20 leaders should use their meeting to agree how to transfer surplus Covid-19 vaccines to low-income countries. The head the Health Service Executive's Vaccine Programme has said that Ireland recently completed a delivery of 340,000 vaccines, which were at risk of expiring, to Uganda.

In a draft communique seen by Reuters, G20 leaders will commit this weekend to tackling the existential threat of climate change, paving the way for more detailed action at COP26. This goal was supposed to be achieved by 2020, according to an agreement reached in 2009, but has not been met. Since then, as extreme weather episodes have intensified and carbon levels in the atmosphere have grown, climate scientists have increasingly emphasised the importance of a 1.5C cap to limit the risk of environmental catastrophe.

However, the 2050 date appears in the draft in brackets, indicating it is still subject to negotiation. The leaders said they will "do their utmost" to avoid building new unabated coal plants, adding the phrase "taking national circumstances into account," which is commonly used to avoid firm commitments.

The great rest

They're hoping for a 30% reduction in the world's population.

They’ll be waiting 😀😀😀

So this lot all travelled either via planes, helicopters, etc. and then feel as if they have the authority to force climate change rules and taxes on the ordinary person at home that's doing their best to pay bills and put food on the table? Hypocrisy

'20 biggest economies' Fascinating phraseology.

Exactly the big players that control everything big pharma and bankers = psychopaths = power and control

70%.... ludicrous figure they should be looking at 90% minimum. 🤡

Must be some sweet lobbying deal when you look at the current scientific data

5 common climate change myths debunkedAs world leaders prepare for the COP26 climate summit starting on 31 October, AFP Fact Check examines some common claims that question the existence of global heating caused by humans. Can't believe this is still a thing in 2021 Never seen an animal mine coal and burn it in a furnace... What about an investigation on the dark money that funds the pseudoscience behind climate change denial? Think Exxon, BP, Shell, Koch Industries etc. That would be informative and very much in the public interest. 👍🏻

Human activity turning protected forests into carbon emittersHuman activities such as logging and intense climate-related events such as wildfires are hindering forests' ability to capture and store more carbon than they emit, which experts say is a cause for grave concern. Ban humans. Not related to the ads you carry for the likes of Diarmuid Gavin who needs his Ranelagh 4×4 by Land Rover.
