Labor reshuffle sees Bowen take on climate portfolio | FletaTheTweeter

“I have said consistently ... climate change action is good for jobs, it is good for reducing emissions, as well as good for reducing power prices,” Mr Albanese said while announcing a sweeping reshuffle on Thursday afternoon.Mr Bowen was the party’s treasury spokesman at the last election and was most recently health spokesman.

Mark Butler will move on from the climate portfolio to take on health and ageing, a portfolio he had previously held in government.“The role of our health system and our aged care system have never been more important,” Mr Albanese said, noting the Aged Care Royal Commission, which is due to hand down its report next month.Mr Butler will be assisted by Clare O’Neill as spokesperson for senior Australians and aged care services.

Mr Albanese appointed his deputy leader, Richard Marles, to a new portfolio covering national reconstruction, employment skills and small business, as well as the role of spokesman for science, and promoted Ed Husic to his cabinet as spokesman for industry and innovation.Replacing Mr Marles as spokesman for defence will be Brendan O’Connor, who Mr Albanese highlighted was a former member of the National Security Committee and had held home affairs and immigration portfolios.

Kristina Keneally has been handed additional responsibilities as spokesperson for government accountability. “She’s someone who calls things as they are and she will be holding the government to account across the board for the rorts, the abuse of process, for the fact that we have a government that thinks that taxpayers’ money is the same as Liberal Party and National Party money,” he said. Our Morning Edition newsletter is a curated guide to the most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
