Australia's chief scientist is backing the Prime Minister's vision for the energy market, arguing natural gas will play a 'critical role' over the next three decades in providing backup power to help the market transition to lower-emissions technology

for Australia "that does not involve the greater use of gas as an important transition fuel".

"Even when the variability is firmed with storage, the price of solar and wind electricity is lower than existing gas-fired electricity generation and similar to new-build coal-fired electricity generation," he said. "In the short-term, as the Prime Minister and Minister Angus Taylor have previously stated, natural gas will play that critical role."

Addressing this summer's bushfires, Dr Finkel advocated for further emissions reduction to curb global warming and endorsed recent remarks from Industry and Science Minister Karen Andrews, declaring "we must move on from disputing the reality of climate change".
