Queensland's eight coal power stations have had several unplanned outages recently, contributing to energy price increases. But what will happen to these stations in the future?

As Australians across the eastern seaboard grapple with rising energy costs, unexpected outages at a handful of Queensland's coal-fired power stations have been cited as part of the problem.

"The best thing we can do here in Queensland is achieve energy independence … by continuing to invest in more renewables and storage."Queensland's eight coal-fired power stations are dotted across the southern corner of the state, from Rockhampton to west of Toowoomba.Queensland has eight coal-fired power stations across the state.

Queensland's oldest and largest coal-fired power station is the subcritical Gladstone Power Station, commissioned in 1976 and owned by NRG Gladstone Operating Services. The 740-megawatt Callide B is scheduled to close in 2028, but a closure date for the 840-megawatt Callide C has not yet been submitted. Both stations are fed by the nearby Callide Mine.CS Energy also owns Kogan Creek supercritical power station, a 750-megawatt station near Chinchilla. It is also one of Queensland's youngest, commissioned in 2007.

We need an answer to baseload power first

Whatever their future is, it's evident we still need them.

A month or so into our new labour over overlords and already we are told to wait for brown outs across the eastern states today. It starts here - we are truly f’ed

The future is bright.

we need them for a little bit longer.

Powering the rest of Australia for the foreseeable future

Hopefully keep them running so we actually have electricity.

Financial Review Alinta CEO says shutting down coal is “Economic Suicide” WB: Good news Albo Labor wants to use more & export more

Coal is a sunset industry, everyone knows it including the coal industry, that’s why coal power station owners are investing heavily in renewables because like everyone else they see the future coming fast

The In-depth Story Behind a Climate Fraud via YouTube

Well if we don't keep them running, power is going to get a lot more expensive. Reality is going to slap the renewable dream in the face - in the next few years. Everyone who thinks renewables are the answer is betting with their own money. They are also betting with my money.

Short I hope!

Go solar... its sunny up there.

Also the highest cancer rate too

Queenslanders: “help! severe storms are destroying our crops and houses”, “help! severe floods have decimated our towns”, “help! the GBR is being destroyed killing our tourism”, “help! somebody pay for our coal plants!”.

Prone to stupidity, were a coal industry state and coal can be 100% clean energy and I've told CSIRO and UQ how but they won't discuss it. Plus CO2 from coal can be made into biodegradable plastics, fixing pollution problem. No one cares or wants to discuss.

Continuing to dig up coal on our massive untapped continent until our government can afford to replace them with sustainable energy. Our tiny population already has the highest taxes and cost of living in the world. China should pay the price for climate change. Not tax payers.

The nation needs these power stations on current projections for at least 20 years. Renewable energy is not baseload energy supply and based on current and future technology never will be. Don’t mention batteries as storage , that technology is probably even 20 years plus away.

Hydrogen power is in fantasy land, so far the energy input for hydrogen is greater than the energy gained, seems a little pointless, on a par with Snowy Hydro 2.

Very bright considering they’re keeping your Heaters on in freezing weather!

While China increase their output and economy growth and the West goes BACKWARDS..you've all been DUPED. Go read some TRUTHS

Killing all our energy on a CLIMATE CHANGE LIE welcome to world socialism everyone, bow to your new CLIMATE overlords that now have more control over you, they've certainly dumbed down your brains and critical thinking skills. What a farce it's all become.

Ask Chris Bowen…..!

closed as quick as possible.

Soon to be stranded assets - the sooner the better.

If we don’t increase our coal exports, India will just take our business. They are doubling their production. Reducing coal production makes no environmental or economic sense.

Provide the rest of the country will power

Convert to renewable?

Great if they keep running them. Bad if they don’t.

BLEAK

We have a climate emergency, they must be closed immediately, we must send all of our money to China to buy renewable made with their new coal fired power plants, it will make them rich and they can build and even bigger and better military, so its a win win

Nuclear.

Well anything Clive wants can get in the bin.

Would you spend money on maintenance for what many are promising will be a stranded asset?

qldpol qldgov queensland econotego ecology ausgov politas polluted flood australia ausgov AlboMP

GO NUCLEAR

The answer only depends on what time frame you are talking about.

As with many industries from roof thatcher to town crier - they served their purpose - but now must be retired and replaced; it doesnt mean job losses - the function is still required - and just we now have roof tilers and media, we require solar and wind turbine installers .

Idiotic climate alarmism leading to power shortages and spiralling costs.

Fact correction - callide c is supercritical. Callide b is the subcritical design.

8 coal-fired power stations too many!

Extinction. They are obsolete and belong on a page in a history book

Increase the number to 12.

Might need to let your mate Matt Carnavan in on QLDs big stash of solar farms..

Demolition

Try

It should be nuclear. Australia needs to stop listening to the scared minority and start listening to the common sense majority. Nuclear power for Australia 🇦🇺

Close them only when it's not replaced with other fossil fuels, completely covered 24-7, 365.

Their future is very short-term given the state of the planet. We all look towards a smooth, rapid transition to renewables and trust that nobody will be disadvantaged in the opposed to the rorting and profiteering going on now in the fossil fuel industry.

Try Battery storage The number of Queensland households with battery storage systems has doubled from 3% to 6% in the last 24 months, with the most significant growth seen in regional Queensland.

Do keep up Known as Australia’s “Sunshine State,” Queensland households have, in just two years, doubled their residential energy storage. The figures reveal 37% of Queensland households now have panels installed, with a further 22% looking to install or upgrade their systems.

their future is for them to remian so climate change lefties have something to whinge about!!

Thete is no other way to reliably supply power 24/7.

Update your ignorance Queensland is leading the nation in the uptake of new solar panels, with 25 Queensland suburbs and towns now recording at least half their households with rooftop solar.

Here’s a solution. If you want ‘green’ unreliable power, choose it for yourself. If you don’t want greenouts, you can choose reliable power for yourself. But you don’t get to make the choice for others.

China has 1,100 coal plants and are building many more. Anything we do is trivial, we just don’t need to be beating ourselves up all the time, it is pathetic.

We know where this is going, so the question is what is the future of Queensland’s reliable baseload energy supply… foxdoom71

You probably should be more worried about yours.

God I hope they have a future otherwise we are fucked

Hopefully they don't have one.

Let’s hope we build on that number and capitalize on an opportunity to produce cheap affordable power and grow our economy
