Nuclear energy has stronger support than coal-fired power and there is net public backing to lift the moratorium and allow it to be consideredAs Opposition Leader Peter Dutton continues to push nuclear energy as part of the solution to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the poll shows public support still lies overwhelmingly with the approach taken by the Albanese government.
Last week Mr Bowen claimed replacing existing coal-fired power in Australia with Small Modular Reactors , as Mr Dutton – in part – is advocating,But amid growing community and environmental backlashes against large-scale transmission projects needed to connect renewable energy, and offshore windfalls needed to help generate it, Mr Dutton is pushing nuclear as a less disruptive and cheaper alternative.
Among Labor voters, 43 per cent agree with this proposal while 39 per cent disagree. Even Greens voters are not overwhelmingly opposed to the idea, with 31 per cent in support and 39 per cent opposed.The poll shows 55 per cent off voters are concerned about the safety of nuclear power while 27 per cent are not, but there is still net support to lift the moratorium and at least consider it.
“The Coalition has adopted an all-of-the-above approach to its climate and energy policy because to decarbonise our economy without weakening it requires every option to be on the table,” he said.
