The next government will be quickly tested on the environment with key global summits on nature and climate change

Chris Packham, who is among over 100 nature and health organisations, as well as individual activists, who are calling for five key measures for nature that the new government should be aiming for as we head towards the 2030 target The Climate Change Committee also found plans to make up a further 33 per cent of the shortfall have “some risks”- while plans for the other 46 per cent are classed as either having “significant risks” or simply being “insufficient”.

Campaigners are demanding it uses these meetings to clearly lay out how it intends to rectify the situation, with detailed plans on how it plans to hit its targets. “But if the next prime minster is at the heart of negotiations, with a strengthened domestic agenda to show that the UK means to keep its commitments to halt wildlife decline and climate change, then the UK could be at the vanguard, helping to shape a new sustainable global economy.”

“The UK will have a golden opportunity, following this election, to take bold climate action that delivers benefits for all,” wrote ClientEarth chief Laura Clarke in the letter. These have put the UK on course to reduce emissions by 59 per cent in 2030 from 1990 – compared to reduction targets of 68 per cent in 2030 and 78 per cent in 2037.

As such, many people will be watching its performance at COP this year to see how it intends to close that gap. “Labour will work with the private sector to double onshore wind, triple solar power, and quadruple offshore wind by 2030. We will invest in carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and marine energy, and ensure we have the long-term energy storage our country needs. A new Energy Independence Act will establish the framework for Labour’s energy and climate policies.”

WCL filed a Freedom of Information request to “see any assessments, evidence or policy papers detailing progress towards the 30×30 target”, reporting that “Defra could provide nothing”. Greenpeace said ahead of COP16, the UK government must be “clear on how it intends to achieve this goal at home and in areas beyond national jurisdiction”.

Due to high seas not being protected marine life in these areas has been under threat from a free-for-all of unregulated exploitation – including overfishing, pollution from ships and human-induced climate change.
