While national energy emissions fell overall - sectors like aviation, transport and data centres pose problems for climate targets

Ireland set 'a new record' for the amount of jet fuel used at airports last year according to the Sustainable Energy Authority.

Less electricity was produced by burning fossil fuels as a result, while other positives outlined in the report include a 300 per cent rise in solar, which still accounts for just 1.9 per cent of our electricity supply and record wind generation. SEAI says the State still "remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels and imported energy" with fossil fuels providing 82.8 per cent of the our energy and renewables just 14 per cent.

Margie McCarthy, Director of Research and Policy Insights at SEAI: "Discussion needs to be had around people considering if travel is necessary. We managed to do it in a confined, constricted and constrained way over Covid.
