A single-minded focus on climate and energy policy promotes unhealthy blue-rich LED lights and effectively bans circadian-friendly lights that promote human health and well-being

Driven by climate policy, the U.S. Department of Energy favors only blue-pump LED light bulbs after July 2028.

In a retrograde move, the U.S. Department of Energy has issued a final rule that, effective June 25 2028,, will firmly cement the dominance of unhealthy blue-pump LED light bulbs. Evidence establishes that circadian-friendly lights should less than 2% 440-495 nm blue in the evening and at night, and more than 20% 440-495 nm blue during the daytime.

Blue-enriched light in the evening phase delays the circadian system more than blue-depleted light at the same intensity. “The adopted standards, which are expressed in minimum lumens output per watt of a lamp or lamp efficacy , ... These standards apply to all products .. manufactured in, or imported into, the United States starting on July 25, 2028.”
