The trial could result in orders from national courts for governments to cut carbon dioxide emissions blamed for climate change faster than currently planned

Six young people from areas in Portugal ravaged by wildfires and heatwaves took 32 European governments to court on Wednesday, arguing their failure to act fast enough on climate change is a violation of their human rights.

With the support of the British-based Global Legal Action Network , the Portuguese applicants, aged between 11 and 24, are seeking a legally-binding decision that would force states to act. To show support, people of all ages gathered outside the court holding banners that read “Stand with youth” and “We are rooting for you”.

“Without urgent action to cut emissions, where I live will soon become an unbearable furnace,” another applicant, 20-year-old Martim Agostinho, said in a statement.
