Battery buildout: SDG&E adds two more energy storage projects to its portfolio

If California is going to meet the climate goal of deriving 100 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045 or sooner, the state’s grid is going to need significantly more battery storage.of projects to its roster, including one in Imperial Valley that represents the largest battery facility in the utility’s portfolio.

The Fallbrook and Westside Canal facilities have a combined capacity of 171 megawatts, enough to power almost 130,000 thousand homes. Solar production may be abundant during the day but practically vanishes after sunset or when smoke and clouds obscure the skies. And when the wind doesn’t blow, production from wind farms peters out. Energy storage — particularly from batteries — is seen as a key way to fill the gaps.
