The change to EVs in South Africa is not a matter of ‘if’ but a ‘when’.

The chief executive of driver training group MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says that while electric vehicle adoption faces many challenges in South Africa, there are just as many solutions – adding that the change to EVs is not a matter of ‘if’ but a ‘when.’

Herbert identified three challenges which are commonly divisive put-offs for electric vehicles in South Africa – he also provided some solutions to these issues that are currently being implemented or are coming. The primary issue for most people concerning EVs is the high initial outlay required, despite the possibility of saving considerably in the long-term, said Herbert.

However, progress is being made in this regard, despite load shedding, including the rollout of charging ports and stations, as well as using solar backups to mitigate the stresses of blackouts.BMW has 230 current charging ports;Mordor Intelligence said significant investment in EWV power capacity is expected over the next decade in Africa.

A new DC 200KW charger with solar backup is also included in the latest rollout and is based at Mall of Africa in Midrand, Gauteng. This new charger will allow compatible cars to charge incredibly quickly, Audi said. Despite regular load shedding affecting South Africa, charging networks capitalise on solar installations to keep charging stations performing optimally.Motorists are particularly concerned that their EV will not make the range of long driving trips, said Herbert.

not at current prices of ev's. just not worth the price.

I recently went electric in a VolvoCar_SA XC40 Recharge. Amazing car. Costs a 1/4 to 1/3 vs diesel (when charging at home). Load-shedding is not an issue - car will charge in the hours you have power. Just like your phone, you will adapt. Won’t be going back.

How much you want to bet this will not happen foe another 20 years! Pie in the sky stuff!!

We also going to go on holiday to moon soon

'sorry I'm late boss, couldn't charge my car because loadshedding'

MandelaMinutes Only for the rich. Remember the citizens will own nothing and they will be happy.

elonmusk When will South Africans 🇿🇦 be able to buy a Tesla vehicle?

LOL 🤣 🤡

Given our grid isnt even close to catering for current demand, there is no conceivable way we would be able cater for this for the next 3 decades at least. If just 10% folks switches to electric cars you would be in stage 8+ today.
