“They’ve not asked me any vulnerability questions' 🔴 Vulnerable people trapped on prepayment meters have said their electricity regularly gets cut off “unexpectedly”, despite them topping up around £200 per month over the winter

On Thursday, Scottish Power, Utilita, Shell Energy, OVO Energy and EDF followed suit after British Gas announced on Thursday it would be suspending all prepayment warrant activity “at least until the end of winter” after an undercover investigation by‘I had to top the prepayment meter up by £600 last month despite basically living in my bedroom’

Ms Cotton, who used to pay for her energy by direct debit, was moved to a new firm in 2021 after her initial energy company went bust. Three months later and out of the blue, she was told she owed £4,000. “There should not be the forcible instalment of prepayment meters full stop,” she said, after British Gas said it would cease applying for court warrants to enter customers’ homes and fit prepayment meters.

More than 100,000 people have signed a 38 Degrees petition calling for an end to energy companies forcing their customers onto prepayment meters.
