British Gas has been heavily criticised for practices around installing prepayment meters.

Energy companies have been asked by the industry regulator Ofgem to suspend the forced installation of prepayment meters.debt agents for British Gas had broken into vulnerable people's homes to fit meters.

The undercover investigation by the Times revealed how agents working for Arvato Financial Solutions on behalf of British Gas had forced their way into the home of a single father-of-three to install a prepayment meter. One debt agent is reported to have said: "This is the exciting bit. I love this bit."

EDF, Britain's second largest supplier, has also confirmed it is suspending the forced installation of prepayment meters and reviewing its practices. In the case of British Gas, Mr Brearley: "We are opening a comprehensive investigation into British Gas on this issue and we will not hesitate to take the strongest action needed," he added.

"I am angry, everyone should be angry. It's completely in the face of all the promises that I've been made by suppliers," he added. Jane said the "horrid" experience had happened just after she had lost her unborn child at 17 weeks. She said she was mentally "broken".

Personally I prefer to pay as I go no big bills then.

There is no reason why prepaymrnt should be more expensive ! The suppliers simply charge more because they can.

They should be making them charge the same to prepayment meters as DD customers - economy 7 day rates are crippling

Nothing about the daylight robbery they’re committing daily just stop fitting meters

Are you deliberately not covering this?

How unfair for the poor to have to pay even more for to stay warm. How typical of life in tory britain

That's a smart meter..... DefundTheBBC

State television, where the only thing that matters, is promoting crooks in the country, gorging on your money.

Forced disconnections. Ofgem seems to looks after the profit but only act when it looks bad. How many people have already had this awful action against them. All prepay need to be removed. Energy companies must be forced to do this now.

The energy companies have record profits...

The courts could Stop Issuing warrants

I'm not a slave to energy companies, I'm human When switching to another company they say they will accept traditional meters When I contacted the current energy company and asked them to provide a traditional meter, they rejected it (EDF) Is this a dictatorship or a democracy?

That looks like a smart meter not a prepayment meter to me.

And also legislation to ensure that they are removed…. Landlords and new homeowners should not be forced to use prepayment metres due to the choices of those before… it’s near impossible to get an engineer to put them back on normal metres….

Your headline is WRONG. They have been “asked” not TOLD.
