After hibernating through most of winter, energy watchdog Ofgem has finally awoken – and told gas and electricity firms to stop breaking into homes to forcibly install expensive prepayment meters ✒️ olyduff

. The problem has become more acute this winter because of growing fuel poverty in Britain, leaving some at risk of losing their power and heating.

Among the judiciary, meanwhile, concern is growing about the legal mess where magistrates wave through batches of court warrants 1,000 at a time, without individual scrutiny. These perfunctory legal orders often happen in “private rooms”, courts tellEnergy Secretary Grant Shapps will hope he can play for time, following today’s cover story – that temperatures rise, wholesale energy prices continue to fall, and his political problem goes away, until next winter.

Their decisions follow British Gas which announced that it is suspending all prepayment warrant activity “at least until the end of winter”.
