“We need to ensure that our voices are heard.”

, “Sexual harassment mainly came in the form of 'compliments' – for example, waiters at the hotel saying, ‘Wow you are so beautiful when walking past them, or a military official at the airport telling me sternly to stop smiling while checking my passport and then saying, ’You have amazing eyes'.”

She explained, "Overall, it did not make me feel like I was safe to be on my own. The COP bus dropped us about a 5-minute walk away from the hotel, down a long empty road with unfinished buildings that had squatters living in them. It was dark by 5 pm, so it didn't feel safe for me to come home alone from COP.

“This can impact women's ability to contribute because they are expending energy navigating these kinds of situations, being on alert, and having to put on a 'nice face' to not be in danger. It also makes it difficult to come and go alone unless you're in a group or with a male companion. This limits the ability to stay late for negotiations, for example. Of course, it also impacts how you dress, though I got harassed no matter how conservatively I was dressed.

From the lack of representation to the various failures to act on climate policies that disproportionately affect women and girls and even a case of sexual harassment – highlighting the barriers women face when engaging with climate activism – it's clear that there's still ample work to be done in ensuring women's voices are heard within the climate movement.
