In the long run yes. Ironically, the stuff fuel is made from is going the way of... With advances in battery technology, changes in transport needs, laws & advances in recycling & resource use, non-petrol/diesel vehicles will overtake petrol/diesel vehicles within twenty years.

What's with the clickbait headlines? Not enough views?

nkilvert In 2016 Australian passenger cars did 175,899 mill kms (ABS 9208.0). At 6 kms per KWh that is 29,316 mill KWh. Over 365 days 24 hrs that's 3,380 MW. Where is that generation capacity? Unless powered from ADDITIONAL solar panels & batteries EVs will worsen power crisis

I often wonder about the impact of mining the minerals used in these batteries. And what happened to hydrogen fuel cells, which have been around for decades? Safety issues?

Public transport needs a lot of improvements before most folks will use it. Security, safety, cleanliness & punctuality are key issues that need to be addressed

Plus Australia doesn’t have the infrastructure to support electric-cars if ever someone planned to drive interstate. NBN is a struggle, I can only imagine how badly providing charging stations will go.

More coal power plants will be needed when electric cars are being used more than petrol powered cars.

What will happen to the spent batteries?

Saudi Arabia must be getting worried about their oil!
