The replacements use an 'energy-release' design that allows the manhole cover to lift about 3 to 4 inches when pressure builds, but then drops back into place and are meant to be safer, following explosions injured two workers this summer.

Boston firefighters and other first responders were on scene downtown at the site of manhole explosions on June 2.

The new covers use an"energy-release" design that lifts about 3 to 4 inches when pressure builds, but then two latches on the rim catch the cover and put it back into place. Traditional manhole covers don't have these safety latches, and have been seen to go hurtling into the air. Then, in July, another series of explosions sent two Eversource workers to the hospital.

The energy provider says its goal is to replace all 6,000 manhole covers in downtown by the end of 2023. Then, it will work on replacements in other parts of the state, Eversource spokesman Chris McKinnon said. The pace at which the company will replace its manhole covers will depend in part on how quickly its sole manufacturer can supply them.

“Designed to be less dangerous during explosions” should make it more obvious than it is that we must electrifyeverything We just removed all the gas lines from site of net zero AND we’re not putting them back. EVER.

Anything to keep the fossil fuel scam going. Exploding methane / natural gas? No problem, we’ve got pressure releasing manhole covers! Only a few will be killed in these explosions!

So…it’s considered normal for gas pressure to build underground to such an extent that manhole covers are routinely lifted in the air?

Finally!

You'd think it would make more sense to eliminate or at least reduce sewer explosions. Somehow this isn't nearly as big a problem in other cities.
